In My Own Words: A Secret Bond

By: Alex J. Nagem © July 26, 2025

What kind of bonds do you share with others? Perhaps it’s the camaraderie formed on an athletic team, the deep brotherhood of military service, the solidarity of a cancer survivor group, or the resilience forged through a shared natural disaster. Or maybe, it’s something more hidden—more sacred—a quiet bond of prayer.

This evening at St. Michael’s Parish, I witnessed something that stirred my heart. After Mass, as I was speaking with friends, I noticed a young woman leave her pew and walk quietly to the altar of Mary. A look of concern shadowed her face. She knelt before the Blessed Mother, gazing upward with what seemed to be a heart full of words only heaven could understand. She remained there in silent prayer.

It’s rare to see someone linger at a side altar after Mass. Clearly, she carried something weighty—something she entrusted to Mary’s care. Moved by her act of faith, I found myself offering a silent prayer for her. I didn’t know her name or her story, but at that moment, we were united in the quiet communion of prayer.

How often have you whispered a prayer for a stranger bowed in reflection? For the person in the pew next to you, or the soul who lights a candle at one of the side altars in the church? These unseen moments of intercession form a sacred bond—an invisible thread linking hearts in the presence of God.

This is the secret bond of prayer. It transcends words and circumstance. It’s how we carry one another to Christ. And in a world that often feels disconnected, it’s one of the most powerful ways we can be united.

Let us not overlook these quiet moments.
Let us become men and women who notice, who pray, and who love silently—through the bond that heaven always hears.

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing,” Martin Luther.

You are remembered in prayers, as I hope my family and I are remembered in yours.
