In My Own Words: I Prayed for You Today

By: Alex J. Nagem © 1.26.2013 Rev. 3.7.2025

I prayed for you today.

There is a reason why you came.

You looked in the church but did not stay.

I know, I’ve felt the same.

You looked as if you lost your way.

You had to leave; you had a look of shame.

The time with God is a small price to pay.

He has called you by name.

God will meet you halfway.

Having you close is His aim.

He is with you every day.

Your place in heaven you can reclaim.

He understands you stray.

In the end, your heart and soul He will claim.

Today, in the name of Jesus, for you I did pray.

———————————————————————————————————————

Today, I prayed for you, that your days be blessed.

Today, I prayed for you, that your worries be at rest.

Today, I prayed for you, that the promises of Christ be your bequest.

Today, I prayed for you, that of earthly wealth you are not possessed.

Today, I prayed for you, that in God’s church, you feel a welcome guest.

Today, I prayed for you, that your sins be forgiven and your mind be at rest.

Today, I prayed for you, that this be part of my daily quest.

Today, I prayed for you, that, Jesus, Our Lord and Savior relieve your unrest.

——————————————————————————————————————-

A simple prayer for you I say,

Hoping your life’s path leads heaven’s way.

A simple prayer only took a moment of time,

To help you with the mountains you must climb.

A simple prayer to God above,

To help you understand His lasting love.

A simple prayer, in Jesus’ name, I did say,

So you don’t lose your way.

—————————————————————————————————————————-

I begin, Hail Mary full of grace,

Pray for us so that in the end we may see God’s face.

On my knees, I begin to pray,

A small price for the love of God to pay.

I pray our sins God will erase,

So, one day we will feel His loving embrace.

For you these words of prayer I say,

That Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lead the way.

Toward heaven their footsteps we trace,

We follow along at a steady pace.

Lord, God in heaven come into our life,

And take away all our strife.

To the Lord above this prayer I send,

This prayer is only the beginning and not the end.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

Lord, for a special person I pray,

They struggle for the right words to say.

Their worries I pray You to relieve,

By Your blessings, they will receive.

They were lost and had gone astray,

With this prayer and Your love, they will find their way.

In You, I know they believe,

It is troubles in life that make them greave.

Lord, for a special person, in Jesus’ name, I pray,

I pray for them today and every day.

A writer and theologian that holds my interest is Dietrich Bonhoeffer. In his book, Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible, he states “But it is a dangerous error, surely very widespread among Christians, to think that the heart can pray by itself. For then we confuse wishes, hopes, sighs, laments, and rejoicings–all of which the heart can do by itself—with prayer. And we confuse earth and heaven, man and God. Prayer does not mean simply pouring out one’s heart. It rather means to find the way to God and to speak with him, whether the heart is full or empty. No man can do that by himself. For that, he needs Jesus Christ.”  John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

I used to pray for “things”. I would pray to pass a test, or that my daughters would pass a test. I would pray for a better job, one with less stress. I would pray that my wife and I would not fight over something we would later find silly. This was not the right way to pray for me. I learned to pray for a calm, confident mind to pass the tests. Passing the tests was up to us. God was not placing the answers on paper or in our heads. We had to study. He provided us with the desire to learn. We needed to pray to use the gift the correct way. Instead of praying for a better job, I prayed to see and follow the direction God has chosen for me…. this line gave me an idea for another later article…. see how prayer works. You must stay aware of the answer that may come in many different forms. Silly fights with my wife do occur. We pray for ourselves and each other each day to find the kindness in ourselves and each other…and the ability to give a meaningful apology, and to accept the apology. We don’t need to pray for loving each other. My wife told me many times that we are in love, and I should not question or doubt her…. that line was written to make you smile. Take some time, to read or re-read the Psalms. You will find 150 songs and prayers to God. One of the Psalms may help you with a prayer to God.  Remember my dear friends, for whom I pray, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. “Colossians 3:17

My thoughts and prayers are for you all,

Hoping you hear the whisper of God’s call.
